The café of the Museum of Culture was open for coffee and cake, with an interesting sculptural roof in contrast to the older buildings all around. A fountain played in the museum’s courtyard and as we walked more around Basel we started to notice fountains everywhere, as well as many public sculptures. It being a public holiday in Basel, all the shops were shut which was a shame as I was tempted by the displays of delicious looking chocolate and marzipan in the Confiserie Schiesser. Many springtime Rhine sailings around Amsterdam feature bulb sailings past acres of tulips that only enhance the beauty of this destination.

In Amsterdam, dozens of museums beckon, from the Rijksmuseum to the Van Gogh Museum. Avalon Waterways was one of the first lines to recognize that not all river cruise passengers want to do the same thing. With that in mind, Avalon offers Active & Discovery itineraries on the Rhine with options to suit both active travelers and those who prefer to explore in a more laid back manner. We travelled on the Amadeus Princess on a 7 day Classical Rhine Cruise which travelled from Basel to Amsterdam, although we disembarked at Cologne. Our coach dropped us in the historic town centre, with its half-timbered houses. We explored the cathedral where the stained glass windows had all been cleaned to make their colour extra bright. Our morning in Strasbourg ended with a boat trip with guided commentary through the Petite-France area of rivers and canals, with view from the water of many more beautiful old houses. Day-trip cruises on the Rhine River are very popular in Germany with departures available from many cities and even small towns on the Rhine.

Here, in our Ultimate Rhine River guide, we showcase ports of call, offering our tips on best sightseeing options along with a dollop of fabulous discoveries we've made along the way. More days means more to discover, with extension packages you can add before or after your Viking cruise or cruisetour. Sure, it depends on whether your soul seeks the silent stories of ancient stones, the exuberant toast of a wine glass raised among new friends, or perhaps the intellectual symphony of history and horizon. AmaWaterways offers themed wine itineraries on the Rhine with enhanced epicurean experiences included in the fare. These sailings are accompanied by a professional wine host who leads onboard tastings and discussions and accompanies trips to local wineries and vineyards.
Here, you taste both the privilege of seclusion and the savor of regional wines. Tauck’s journeys are crafted for those with an insatiable curiosity—a rare endeavor in luxury cruising, making it both a cruiser’s delight and a scholar’s treasure. We had been able to dip into interesting riverside towns, each with its own story to tell, while enjoying a comfortable and luxurious base on the Amadeus Princess. After our castle visit we walked down to the old town where narrow stone staircases lead down from the old monastery building above the town.

The line is also highly considerate of any mobility issues its passengers might have and provides options for all. On the cruise we had an excellent guide for every place we visited, but now we were free to wander at our own pace with just a leaflet to explain the points of interest. The Amadeus Princess takes a detour along the Mosel River to Cochem where we visited the picturesque Reichsburg Castle, learned about local wines and cycled be the river. Our day began in Rüdesheim with a walking tour of this charming small town, the highlight of which was the music museum. An old manor house houses a collection of mechanical musical instruments, bought and restored by Siegfried Wendel, with everything from a colourful fairground organ to a tiny music box. Our cruise covered everything on the Rhine River map from the city of Strasbourg, the music museum at Rudesheim, wine tasting in Alsace to admiring the romantic castles and landscape of the Middle Rhine.
Afterward, enjoy a locally brewed beer at one of the waterfront bars along the Rhine -- hoppy and slightly bitter kolsch brews are the norm around Cologne. The Rhine starts its journey in Switzerland's Alps and passes through iconic cities in France (including Strasbourg), Germany (Dusseldorf and Cologne) and the Netherlands. A European river cruise along the Rhine will reveal the best of Western Europe, from its unique scenery, to the exquisite cuisine on offer. We're here to answer your questions about Uniworld cruises and ships, as well as any of our special offers.
Other tours are more somber, including visits to poignant World War II sites in the Colmar Pocket, one of the last regions in France occupied by German forces. Tales from legendary battles here include that of 19-year-old American soldier-turned-actor Audie Murphy, who single handedly held off an entire German platoon. Ships dock right in the heart of the cultural and colorful Dutch capital that's home to -- depending on estimates -- over 800,000 bicycles. Amsterdam is a maze of canals that make for perfect days wandering the city center (or checking it out by bike, if you can handle the two-wheel traffic). If history isn't quite your thing, have no fear -- this is an oenophile's dream destination, too. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is flanked by lush vineyards that make up Germany's most renowned wine-growing region.
Discover the secrets of historic riverside towns, majestic castles, and lush vineyards that line the picturesque banks, as this guide unveils the most captivating sights and sounds along the iconic route. With expert recommendations on must-see landmarks and hidden gems, your Rhine River adventure will be filled with culture, wonder, and memories to last a lifetime. Discover the gastronomic delights that await you in quaint riverside towns, where local cuisine and Rhine wines provide an authentic taste of regional specialties.
Beneath the vines are beds of slate, which act like a radiator to help ripen the grapes. We enjoyed our walk around the pedestrianised centre of the town with plenty of cafes and beer gardens. Near the old stone bridge were the marks of the water levels in past centuries when the town had flooded.
You can harness that dreamy atmosphere on Uniworld's one-of-a-kind boutique vessels, like the River Queen. The Disney name is synonymous with family fun, so it's not a surprise that Adventures by Disney is easily the best Rhine River cruise line for families. Adventures by Disney charters AmaWaterways ships that carry only 140 passengers, and brings their own spin to the sailings through Adventure Guides who are trained in all things kids.

The Rhine River is a very popular day-trip destination from cities such as Cologne (Köln) and Frankfurt am Main.
By the afternoon we reached Koblenz, named after the confluence of the rivers Moselle and Rhine. Over 80 percent of the town was destroyed by Allied bombing in the Second World War. We passed the high cliff, known as the Loreley, where only a narrow channel of the river is navigable, causing many ships to founder at this point of the Rhine.
